From the beginning of time, colognes has been a needed part of life. Ancient Egyptians burnt kyphi, a type of incense, at religious rites. The Bible told us that the three wise men took myrrh & frankincense when they visited new-born Jesus. Here is a brief account about how fragrances are made.
The earliest history data reveal that humans have attempted to better their body odor by making products that mimic the smells of nature. Organic and man made items are used in modern perfume creation. These are added to ingredients, soaps and numerous other cosmetic products. Clearly, we also use perfume on our bodies. An interesting fact is that a single perfume will smell different to everyones noses.
Perfume making techniques have evolved over the centuries. So has the way they are contained. Bottles in ancient days were as very detailed and complex as the aromatic oils contained in them. Present day bottles arefashioned to represent the fragrance’s character.
Latin words’per’ and ‘fumum’ have been used to make up the word ‘perfume’. These words translate to ‘through’ and ‘smoke’ respectively. Our forefathers applied downwards force to plants and flowers to obtain oils. These oils were heated to impart aroma into the air.
Organic products used in cologne making are leafs, roots, fruits, flowers grasses, gums, animal oils, resins, and wood. Other ingredients are alcohol, coal and petrochemicals. The majority of plants cannot produce oils normally, so synthetic chemicals are used to mimic fragrances. Of the 250k listed species, only 2,000 yield natural oils.
Certain animal products are used to provide fragrances with their distinctive aromas. As an example, ambergris comes from sperm whales, musk from male deer, and castor from beavers. Animal products are often added to decrease evaporation. This makes the perfume scent lengthier.
When manufacturing begins, the first part involves separating essentials oils. There are several methods of doing this. They are steam distillation, solvent extraction, enfleurage, expression, or maceration. The essential oils are thrown together according to the perfume’s unique formula. It can include some 800 ingredients to arrive at a formula.
After creating the perfume alcohol is merged to it. The amount of alcohol varies. The majority of full-bodied fragrances consist of 15 percent perfume oils mixed with alcohol and a little water. It can take days, weeks and even years for a fine perfume to age. Lastly, the blend will be tested by a ‘nose’. A name given to a perfume expert.
Synthetically made fragrances have given perfumers a lot more freedom in their craft. Natural ingredients are however the first choice when it comes to making the finest perfumes. Using synthetic oils and other products, the perfume maker does not need to try extracting oils from animals. It also eradicates the risk of bad plant harvest. Hence, the lives of many animals are spared.
This is how perfumes are made today. The use of synthetic products has also resulted in a decline in the price of fragrance. Which are more cheap and can be used on a daily basis, not just on special occasions. The United States is the largest fragrance market in the world, with annual sales of billions of dollars.
