In modern society, shopping is a fact of life. Often it’s easy to figure out just how to buy what you need. Some specialized products, however, can get rather complicated. One of the most intimidating first-time shopping experiences can be a visit to the perfume store. Even if you have a good idea of what you want to buy, the sheer number of options can be enough to put you off your shopping trip. This need not be the case, though; some basic preparation before heading out will help ensure a pleasant and stress-free day of shopping.
It is very helpful to have a general idea of what you’re looking for. Perfume review websites can help you narrow down what kind of fragrance you like, and are also handy to learn common terms used to describe different perfume aromas. Use this information to create an idea of your goal. Even general criteria, such as “something for springtime,” “something subtle,” or, “something floral,” will be of great help when you get to the store.
You also have to prepare for the environment in the store. It might be a little odd for you, but it is not the same thing as shopping for groceries. You may expect there to be lots of people or only a few people. Regardless of the case this is what you should expect:
Instead of walking the aisles and asking an employee if you’re having trouble, there will almost certainly be a clerk, sometimes called a “perfumer” behind a large counter setup with product displays. Often this person will be one of the more experienced employees, often specifically chosen to work exclusively in the fragrance department; they are much more attentive than the average salesman on the floor.
Here is where so many perfume store newcomers get stuck. They see one person behind a huge counter top display case and don’t know what to make of it. Some assume this person is merely a cashier, some assume it’s a security employee. The most common mistake is avoiding this person until you’re ready to make a purchase, in fact, they’ve been assigned there specifically to help you find a perfume that’s right for you. This employee is your number one resource from the moment you enter the building.
You should go and ask them if they think they could find a smell that suits you. Introduce who you are and what you came looking for you. They will probably ask you to try a few different smells. They are trained so they can be used to find what you want. There will be a wide selection, but they will know all of the different smells and be prepared even if you are not.
The clerk will probably be able to determine what will be good for you and then you can try a few out. They will have a few small bottles they call “testers” which you can use to smell and find out what you think. You can spray them on the tester card next to the perfume, wave it around a bit and smell it. Once you try a few, you may have the smell in your nose. To get it out, they may have a bowl of coffee beans. Smelling these will clear your senses so you can keep going. After you make a selection the clerk will help you check out.
Since perfume can be very different and very unique it has its own kind of environment in the store. It may seem like a hassle at first but with a little bit of research and knowing what is going to happen, there is no need to get stressed. Don’t forget that perfume is a luxury item. Everyone has their own taste and yours might take some hunting to find. So prepare for your little escapade and the whole experience can be hassle free fun.
