Spotting Fake Designer Perfumes

by John Darly

It’s important to know what you are looking for when trying to find a trusted fragrance store for designer perfumes as many out there now sell fakes that are difficult to spot. In search for your favorite designer perfume it’s common to look through different perfume shops and not being able to determine what is original and what is fake. In order to find a high quality perfume you must know how to spot a fake and find a fragrance store you can trust.

When you go into a fragrance shop and speak with the clerk, ask to see the box up close. Review closely if there are any statements such as designer impostor, or inspired by. There are legitimate companies out there that make perfumes like the originals, and have permission and are required to state that their perfume isn’t the original, but made to smell like it. A good way to check the validity of a fragrance store is by asking if they offer such perfumes, and if they deny it and you still find this information, then avoid buying from them altogether.

It’s easiest to find fake perfumes if you have already used this perfume in the past and have the box and bottle still. Make sure that on your way to the perfume shop you take them with you, as it will help you prove the validity of the ones there. Also, make sure that the perfume that you had in the past is not a fake as well, as that will do you no good in verifying the ones at the fragrance store. When in the fragrance shop take out the old box and review it with theirs, check for color, design, and material used, and ditch the store should you find a difference.

If possible ask the clerk at the fragrance shop to take the bottle out of the box. Keep in mind that it’s possible that the tester bottle and box may be original and what they sell you is different, so if possible check to see if the fragrance shop has a policy that you can check the box and perfume of the fragrance you want to buy. If the fragrance shop doesn’t allow you to open the box ask what their return policy is and open it after you’ve purchased it in front of them to review. If it turns out to be a fake, call them on it and ask for your money back and never return to this perfume store. When checking the perfume review the box and bottle for the spelling of the name, design of emblem, as well as the designer name.

Although you cannot find any difference in the box or the bottle in regards to design, names, or materials, the bottle still needs to be further examined. The color of the perfume needs to be checked. Especially if it’s a perfume you’ve used in the past, or have with you in person, which would be best. Check if the colors match, exactly. Diluted colors are also a bad sign, as that means that it may be the original perfume but diluted, and if it is, it could have chemicals that can harm you. A fragrance shop that has any of these differences in their perfumes needs to be avoided at all costs. Aside from what is inside the bottle, you must further analyze the bottle itself. Check on the back what it says for the liquid weight. Also, the atomizer needs to be looked over. The color and size are very important as well as the design. Make sure that they are identical to the designer bottle. Also, the stickers on the back of the fragrance shop bottle that have all the small print must be identical.

Another important reason that you make sure that you open the perfume box at the fragrance shop is to compare the bottles. The box may be identical to the original, however the bottle may have differences. The liquid weight if important to review, as well as atomizer. Make sure that the color, size, and design are the same as the original Women’s perfume. Each type of perfume has stamps or stickers on the bottle itself, a good way to rule out a fake is making sure that the stamps on the original and fragrance shop one are identical.

As a rule of thumb, when purchasing Women’s perfume from an online perfume shop make sure that you ask for extra pictures. They need to include the bottle and box with their details, and if they send you advertising pictures of the perfume, don’t buy it. Also, make sure that you ask for their return policy, as its good to know that if you didn’t get a good look in the pictures, you can return it if you find out its fake after you’ve received it. Lastly, if it’s really surprisingly cheap, it’s fake.

Avoid going to a hidden away little perfume shop to find high quality perfumes. Anything that looks shady probably is. Best bet is department stores, as they offer somewhat outdated original perfumes at great prices. Also, you may want to follow sales or possible coupons at a trusted fragrance shop. Buying a fake perfume is always a risk due to health hazards, however, they also lose their smell over time and may even smell bad after a while.
