Selecting The Right Women’s Perfume

by Diane Sanders

Women’s perfume comes in a range of types based on price and fragrance. Eau de toilettes are the lowest priced among women’s perfumes. These contain about 3 to 8% fragrance and are mostly made up of oil, water and alcohol.

Eau de parfums belong to the next category of women’s perfumes. These contain a higher concentration of fragrance – 8 to 16%. As compared to eau de toilettes, eau de parfums are stronger and stay on longer.

High end women’s perfumes contain at least 15 to 30% fragrance and may last upto seven hours. These perfumes are made from natural ingredients therefore they have a much richer scent. Despite their high prices, they are usually worth the money.

The fragrances used in women’s perfumes can be classified into multiple categories.

Floral fragrances are the most popular among all fragrances. As the name suggests, these are extracted from flowers. Therefore, every type of floral fragrance represents the flower from which it is obtained. The most common floral fragrances are rose, violet, jasmine and orange. This type of fragrance is generally used to create a romantic ambience.

Oriental fragrances are far stronger than the floral type. These are obtained from spices, resins and amber and are a often a combination of these elements. Such fragrances create an exotic ambience and are considered suitable for wearing in corporate settings.

Green fragrances are used to create an atmosphere that reminds one of spring. The scent of a green fragrance is refreshing and is similar to the smell of grass that has been freshly cut.

Fruity fragrances are usually suited for younger women. Popular fruity fragrances are extracted from citrus fruits like lemon and mandarin. They create a refreshing atmosphere and are perfect when the weather is mild.

Woody fragrances belong to the category known as chyper. This type of fragrance was created by Francois Coty, a French perfumer and was named after Cyprus. Chyper fragrances are sweet and earthy and contain hints of bergamot and oak mass.

While selecting a women’s perfume, try it on your skin rather than on a tissue. This is because perfumes change their smell when they react with body oils.

While wearing perfume, make sure the fragrance does not clash with the fragrance of your body moisturizer. Ideally buy a body lotion that matches the perfume you are wearing. Never apply more than one perfume at a time. Always spray on women’s perfume – don’t splash it on!
